I am Michelle Embree Ku, and I want to represent you in Hartford. I am running for Newtown’s 106th District
- House of Representatives
I am running to bring a new voice to Hartford
I moved to Newtown fifteen years ago, along with my husband and three children, with my parents following shortly thereafter. I became involved in volunteering in the schools. What was supposed to be a brief interruption in my career in science and research, soon took on a greater purpose. Motivated by the events on December 14, 2012, I became involved in gun violence prevention advocacy and community recovery efforts. Wanting to do more, I ran for the Newtown Board of Education, where I served for eight years (four as the Chair). More recently, I served on the Legislative Council, and I am now a Selectperson.
What continues to inspire me today is what drove me to get involved more than a decade ago. Like many of my neighbors, I want us to live in a safe and affordable community, with accessibility to quality education.
In my twelve years serving Newtown residents, I collaborated with others to find ways to address many key issues such as
healthier school start times,
school enrollment fluctuations,
heating and ventilation in schools,
safety and security in schools
a ten-year trend of presenting budgets that would pass public approval
I am experienced in the legislative process, and I enjoy being part of problem-solving.
chaired the Connecticut Legislature’s Task Force on Life Threatening Food Allergies. ,
was a member of the Governor’s Regional Advisory Team to examine how our students would safely return to the classroom during COVID.
chaired the Government Relations Committee for the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education
was President of the EdAdvance Board of Directors.
I am running to address the concerns expressed by my Newtown neighbors. Many of these issues need solutions that go beyond Newtown, which is why I want to give Newtown a meaningful voice in Hartford.
I will fight for a healthcare system that actually works for us. One that provides for family planning, a better insurance marketplace, and quality hospitals. And I will advocate to address the public health threat of gun violence;
I will continue to fight for education – better air quality in our schools, learning that leads to opportunities, and special education funding;
I will advocate to protect the health of our environment by encouraging smart development, better solid waste management and the use of green resources;
I will press for more accessible housing and a livable community, inclusive of all residents.
I’m running to bring a new voice to our state government and to represent you. Over the coming weeks and months, I look forward to sharing my ideas with you and hearing your thoughts on how to make Newtown an even better place to live.
